Dirty/Clean Air Ducting Systems
Continental air ducts are used for both the dirty air side (in front of the air filter) and the clean air side (behind the air filter). Depending on the filter system used, the clean air duct must be able to withstand vacuum pressure of up to -180 mbar (i.e. 820 mbar absolute) without collapsing.
If the air duct leads directly from the air filter to the turbocharger, high temperature resistance is required for the connection to the turbocharger. Due to the high air flow rate, a smooth and streamlined inner hose design is required in order to minimize pressure loss. This also has a positive effect on the acoustic behavior of the hose.
Continental has developed a bellows design that not only lends the hose excellent flexibility, but also meets the requirements for vacuum resistance in service. The aim of this development was to achieve optimal balance between the weight of the hose on the one hand and compliance with the requirements on the other hand.
